Every last one: The rise of sylvia boone
After the fall of nations, corporations have established authoritarian control over every major city, prioritizing order over freedom. Sylvia Boone, a corporal in the region’s police force, finds herself in an impossible situation. When she discovers high-ranking elites are enabling human rights violations, she is unable to look the other way.
After a deadly shootout, a bounty is placed on her head and Sylvia is forced to escape Winnipeg with a band of fugitives into the Canadian wilderness. As their quest for safety from authoritarian control and the promise of peace eludes them time and again, Sylvia trades any hopes of safety for vigilante justice. |

This is a great dystopian adventure story!
Every Last One by J.B. Velasquez honours the genre: the greedy government, futuristic Sci-Fi technology, military corruption, climate-activism-gone-haywire, and ‘evil genius’ pharmaceutical psychopath enriches the world and pushes the plot. But the book isn’t just about its obstacles. The ensemble cast—with Sylvia Boone in the lead—brings heart and humour to an otherwise bleak piece of fiction. Velasquez highlights the characters relationships, and their relatable interpersonal challenges, which humanizes the fantastical narrative; and keeps readers hooked until its satisfying ending.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Every Last One. Kudos to Velasquez for a wonderful addition to his authorial canon.

Eerily on point about the trajectory of this world, Every Last One thrusts readers into an incredibly believable dystopian nightmare. I found myself saying “yep, I think that’s where this world is headed, too” at almost every page turn. Yet, that’s only the surface of the novel.
Through multiple POV’s the adventure of this quirky found family unfolds one layer at a time slowly revealing the monsters, insecurities, and resilience each character holds.
It was a great reminder that there is always a backstory, always a motive, and always a sea of “why’s” behind each persons actions. Through the perfect concoction of morally grey characters, I felt like I was dancing with demons, monsters, and animalistic instincts the entire time.
Every Last One was the perfect read to be reminded about the power of rebellion, will power, and found family into every page of this futuristic tale.

Great dystopian read, relevant to the current state of the world. Rich ground for more adventures of Sylvia Boone.
